The Friends of the Jordan River Watershed, organized in late 1990, is a grassroots, nonprofit, non-governmental organization with the mission to "Conserve the natural resources and protect the environmental quality of the
Jordan River and its watershed."
The old Vance Building was moved on June 15, 1999, and became the new Jordan River Watershed Center. FOJ has restored the exterior to reflect its historical architecture. The interior has been transformed into an educational/environmental center wherein students, residents, and visitors alike can learn about the unique natural features and history of the Jordan River Watershed. This center provides a meeting/lecture space, an indoor/outdoor classroom, displays, maps, and demonstrations heightening the environmental awareness and appreciation of the Jordan Valley. It also houses the offices of FOJ. The grounds have been landscaped with native plants and low impact trails to provide viewing opportunities of the rich ecologic communities of the Jordan River estuary.

This 5-acre park is located just across the bridge from downtown East Jordan. Located at the great vantage point where Lake Charlevoix and the Jordan River meet, it is the perfect spot for viewing waterfowl and wildlife including bald eagles and osprey. There are several fishing piers at the south end of the park. Spring brings fishermen rainbow and brown trout, while Fall brings the return of spawning Chinook salmon.
Besides being the home of the Jordan River Watershed Center and the Friends of the Jordan, Sportsman's Park is the site of the East Jordan Garden Club Farmer's Market, May through October, Thursdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is also a community wide Kid's Fishing Pond for kids 15 years and under to fish free for trout and blue gill.

From Ellsworth, take C-48 east approximately two miles to South Arm Township Park and a small parking area on the right (south) side of the road. There is a rustic boat launch on the river.
Visitors can follow a wood-chipped trail to a boardwalk that overlooks St. Clair Lake. This one mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline is also excellent for canoeing.

The East Jordan & Southern was originally a logging railroad, moving lumber to the mill on Lake Charlevoix in East Jordan. It was incorporated as a common carrier in 1901, and connected to the Pere Marquette in Bellaire. As the area became logged out, the EJ&S had permission to shut down in 1932. Instead, they reinvented themselves, became a passenger and freight road. They became famous for the free train rides each year on Independence Day and on some of those trips BANDITS would rob the train. They ran their farewell fan trip on August 12, 1961, and operations ceased at the end of the month. Over the line’s entire 60 year existence the President and General Manager was an East Jordan Porter.
